A Composition Theorem for the Fourier Entropy-Influence Conjecture

چکیده
The Fourier Entropy-Influence (FEI) conjecture of Friedgut and Kalai [1] seeks to relate two fundamental measures of Boolean function complexity: it states that H[f ] ≤ C · Inf [f ] holds for every Boolean function f , where H[f ] denotes the spectral entropy of f , Inf [f ] is its total influence, and C > 0 is a universal constant. Despite significant interest in the conjecture it has only been shown to hold for a few classes of Boolean functions. Our main result is a composition theorem for the FEI conjecture. We show that if g1, . . . , gk are functions over disjoint sets of variables satisfying the conjecture, and if the Fourier transform of F taken with respect to the product distribution with biases E[g1], . . . ,E[gk] satisfies the conjecture, then their composition F (g1(x ), . . . , gk(x )) satisfies the conjecture. As an application we show that the FEI conjecture holds for read-once formulas over arbitrary gates of bounded arity, extending a recent result [2] which proved it for read-once decision trees. Our techniques also yield an explicit function with the largest known ratio of C ≥ 6.278 between H[f ] and Inf [f ], improving on the previous lower bound of 4.615.

Improved Lower Bounds for the Fourier Entropy/Influence Conjecture via Lexicographic Functions
Every Boolean function can be uniquely represented as a multilinear polynomial. The entropy and the total influence are two ways to measure the concentration of its Fourier coefficients, namely the monomial coefficients in this representation: the entropy roughly measures their spread, while the total influence measures their average level. The Fourier Entropy/Influence conjecture of Friedgut a...
متن کاملA note on the Entropy/Influence conjecture
The Entropy/Influence conjecture, raised by Friedgut and Kalai (1996) [9], seeks to relate two different measures of concentration of the Fourier coefficients of a Boolean function. Roughly saying, it claims that if the Fourier spectrum is “smeared out”, then the Fourier coefficients are concentrated on “high” levels. In this note we generalize the conjecture to biased product measures on the d...
متن کاملThe Fourier Entropy-Influence conjecture holds for a log-density 1 class of cryptographic Boolean functions
We consider the Fourier Entropy-Influence (FEI) conjecture in the context of cryptographic Boolean functions. We show that the FEI conjecture is true for the functions satisfying the strict avalanche criterion, which forms a subset of asymptotic log–density 1 in the set of all Boolean functions. Further, we prove that the FEI conjecture is satisfied for plateaued Boolean functions, monomial alg...

Given f : {−1, 1}n → {−1, 1}, define the spectral distribution of f to be the distribution on subsets of [n] in which the set S is sampled with probability f̂(S). Then the Fourier EntropyInfluence (FEI) conjecture of Friedgut and Kalai [FK96] states that there is some absolute constant C such that H[f̂] ≤ C · Inf [f ]. Here, H[f̂] denotes the Shannon entropy of f ’s spectral distribution, and Inf ...
متن کاملThe Fourier Entropy-Influence Conjecture for Certain Classes of Boolean Functions
In 1996, Friedgut and Kalai made the Fourier Entropy–Influence Conjecture: For every Boolean function f : {−1, 1} → {−1, 1} it holds that H[f̂] ≤ C · I[f ], where H[f̂] is the spectral entropy of f , I[f ] is the total influence of f , and C is a universal constant. In this work we verify the conjecture for symmetric functions. More generally, we verify it for functions with symmetry group Sn1×· ...
